My 42nd birthday calls for a musical treat for my online visitors! Today the war goes on with the song “The Consequence Of Victory”. It deals with the end of the so-called “Phoney War” (or “Sitzkrieg” in German) when German forces swiftly invaded Denmark and Norway (Operation Weserübung), the lowlands (Fall Gelb) and France (Fall Rot).
The song ends with the Battle of Britain; the military campaign in which the Royal Air Force (RAF) defended the United Kingdom against large-scale attacks by Nazi Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe.
The last line in the lyrics is taken from the famous wartime speech made by the British prime minister Winston Churchill on the 20th of August 1940. In this line in the speech he is referring to the ongoing efforts of the Royal Air Force crews who were at the time fighting the Battle of Britain.
Listen to the song here:
The Consequence Of Victory
The Sitzkrieg ends as invasion lures
Pre-emptive strikes, unleash the wolves
A strategy to secure the Norwegian Corridor
Capture naval bases and ensure Swedish iron ore
Defensive lines collapse under armoured attack
Positions are outflanked, under pressure they crack
Concept of annihilation, a doctrinal evolution
Claiming more territory, the consequence of victory
The lowlands are trampled, Northern France overwhelmed
Disaster is unfolding, an armistice confirmed
Concept of annihilation, a doctrinal evolution
Claiming more territory, the consequence of victory
Nothing to temper the wave of euphoria
A clash of empires, a fight against dystopia
The Battle of France is over, the Battle of Britain (is) about to begin
Deceptive thoughts backfire in their finest hour
Dogfights are not done until victory is won
Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few
