Title: Visit to Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung in Koblenz
Die Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung (WTS) translates to The Scientific Collection of Defense Engineering Specimens, also called Defense Technology Museum. It has an exhibition space of 7,200 square meters and is thus one of the biggest technically oriented collections in the Federal Republic of Germany. Founded in 1962, it is part of the organization of the Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (Das Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr or BAAINBw) and is situated in Koblenz, the main BAAINBw location.
The Scientific Collection of Defense Engineering Specimens has a considerably large exhibition area offering the possibility to have a closer look at the different pieces of equipment, weapon systems and many other things.
The collection / exhibition focuses on:
- Hand and machine guns
- Artillery technology
- Missile technology
- Anti-armor weapons
- Wheeled and tracked vehicles, engineer and recovery technology
- Aircraft and naval technology
- Communications, electronic and optical equipment
- Personal clothing and equipment
The exhibits are unfortunately really close to each other so space to make photographs is limited and lighting is an issue when you don’t have a good camera (like me in 2011). Nevertheless definitely worth a visit. There’s lots to see here folks, take a full day to appreciate the vast collection on all floors. And be quick, the future of this place is uncertain.
